2021 Pride Spotlight NVC
I was featured on the Napa Valley College Instagram for the "Pride Super Spotlight".
The post read:
In honor of pride month our @nvclgbtq club is shining a super spotlight on those who are changing and shaping the LGBTQ culture on campus. ✌🏻
Meet Luis Urena | NVC student and dedicated community member who is consistently focused on his fellow students and their ability to succeed.
Luis Ureña grew up in Napa Valley, CA. While attending NVC, he led both the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers Chapter and the Society for the Advancement of Chicanx/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science chapters. He obtained an internship with the MESA/STEM Center designing an automated stock trading program and image processing. In his free time, he enjoys giving back to the community and most recently had the opportunity to intern with On the Move - Citizenship and Legal services and currently works as the MESA/STEM Center Student Assistant. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Luis plans to work as a software developer.
My LGBT impact happens twice a month, as an employee at the MESA/STEM Center, we talked about equity and what it looks like for students. I learned a lot and made changes to the way we present ourselves as employees of the college.
In addition, I brought my training in inclusion to the places of which I had leadership positions as the co-president of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and the President of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanx/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) at NVC.
Having pride for Luis, as he shares: "this gay student has had 4 scholarships, 3 diplomas, 2 internships, and 1 fellowship. Yes I reach for the stars, but the trick is to aim further than that."
